June 25th, 2014 - Report by Angelique Edgerton

This week's update is a little less "woodsy" -- you can tell my recent outdoor time has been consumed by invasive plant projects! Next week I should have some fun reports from Temperance River, though, as we have a hike scheduled there for Monday. (And I'm ready to stop looking at invasives!)

Due to the rain and a busy work schedule this past week, I was not able to get out into the woods as much as I would have liked. Despite that, my work schedule took me up and down the shore, and I got an eyeful of what’s in bloom out there on the roadsides. Late June tends to be one of the best times to see our roadsides in bloom – although mostly with non-native plants. This week the lupines (Lupinus polyphyllus), oxeye daisies (Leucanthemum vulgare), hawkweeds (Hieracium aurantiacum, Hieracium pilloseloides, and more), buttercupsand tall buttercups (Ranunculus acris) were in full display throughout the county. Just into the woods, the thimbleberries (Rubus parviflorus) and golden Alexanders (Zizia aurea) were out. And – did I mention my work schedule with invasive species has been busy? – our newest and latest two highly invasive plants in the county were both in bloom: Dalmatian toadflax (Linaria dalmatica) and garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata).
