After coffee break we took
the loop up the Gunflint
Trail, over on the Shoe Lake
Road and down the Arrowhead
Trail with lunch sitting on the
Hovland Dock with the bug-free
breezes blowing over us from
Lake Superior.
At first I thought the
Wild Rose would be the
flower of the day it is so
beautiful but took second
place with the
Canada Anemone taking first.
We have never seen so many of
them in area after area. I
guess we like anemones they
are so crisp and white and
usually are in a group.
We walked a way into the
Assinika Bog it was nearly
covered with
Labrador Tea that was
different. We got there a bit
past prime, but there were also
more than usual Small
Cranberries. That flower is
so beautiful.
We took the boardwalk into
Shoe Lake. The
Linnea were blooming
profusely along the way. We
picked one what a lovely
smell. At the lake there was a
yellow flower that we had to
look up (either we had forgotten
it or it was new to us). It was
Tufted Loosestrife.
Some of the other flowers we
saw that pleased us were:
Bunchberries, Yellow Pond
Lilies, a few
Iris, Lesser Stitchwort,
Thimbleberry (I think they
look like white roses), Yellow
Sweet Clover, Caraway,
Columbine,
Purple Cow Vetch, Golden
Alexander, a Grey Fox and a
beautiful copper colored deer.
The gardens at the Hovland
Post Office are very lovely,
they are cared for by the new
Hovland Garden Club.
Al Franken has been named our
new Senator.
