Wildflowers of the
Northwoods and BWCA |
 |
|
This is the beginning of our
24th year of looking at
wildflowers in Cook County, MN.
We are three senior women who
just love to get out and explore
and learn new things. We are
even getting together all winter
but don't find too many flowers
at that time, but no matter.

We went to
Judge C. R. Magney State Park.
First we took the loop, then
part way along the trail to
Devil's Kettle. The flowers of
the day were One-flowered
Wintergreen and
Bush Honeysuckle. The
biggest treat was on the way to
Devil's Kettle in the first
fenced in deer enclosure we saw
two
Pink Moccasin flowers
blooming.
Wednesday, June 29, 2005:
Our goal was to see the Wood
Lilies on the Magnetic Rock
Trail but found that they were
too far in for us to walk and
also heard at the Trailhead that
they were past prime. We had
been told of a bog in that area
that was supposed to have an
Orchid in it but there were a
lot of areas of bogs and many
were hard to access.
We then went to Poplar Lake Boat
Access. In my memory it was so
beautiful but that memory was
before the blow down. We did see
a nice patch of Canada Anemone
blooming and another patch of
Bog Buckbean that were
through blooming. As we were
turning from the Poplar Lake
Access onto the Gunflint Trail
we noticed a large patch of
Northern Green Orchids. The
roadways still have lots of
Yellow Hawkweed &
Buttercup, White
Daisies &
Orange Hawkweed.
Lupine and Spreading Dogbane
were the flowers of the day
along with
Cow Parsnips &
Wild Roses.
Friends have told us of the
Large Flowered Pensteman and
Vipers Bugloss blooming and
also
Pinesap.
The day began foggy and misty
but when we were ready to get
out and hike the sun was out -
Mother Nature knew it was a
Wednesday.
