Wildflowers of Eagle Mountain

View from Eagle Mountain, photo by Lorraine Anderson

June 29th, 2004 - Report by Lorraine Anderson

A trip to Eagle Mountain - was a big undertaking for this senior. It was a six hour trip over very rugged terrain. I fell Eagle_Mt._view_cond.jpg (173993 bytes), Photo by Lorraine Andersontwo times flat on my face and twisted my ankle more and due to some miracle hardly got hurt. I was very glad IEagle_Mt._Jackpine_trail_cond.jpg (27013 bytes), Photo by Lorraine Anderson went. The first part was through a beautiful Jack Pine forest. There were many flowers along the way, most notably, Pink Moccasins, Three-leaved Solomon's Seal, yellow Pond Lilies and a wonderful display of some Fungus that we have been told was eatable but we didn't try.
Finally we reached the top and OH WHAT A VIEW!!! it was worth it but don't know if I will do it again

About Eagle Mountain:

Eagle Mountain is Minnesota's highest peak, towering at 2,301 ft.  The trail is within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) and requires a permit.

Latitude 47 degrees 54 minutes N

Longitude 90 degrees, 34 minutes W

"Eagle Mountain and its surrounding environs of Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area and Superior National Forest are some of the most beautiful places on the planet.

In just a few miles, many of the state's famous "10,000 lakes" tumble 1,700 feet over volcanic rock billions of years old from the highest point in the Sawtooth Mountains to the lowest point (Lake Superior).

There are spectacular waterfalls and rushing rivers everywhere.  There are timber wolves (which we actually saw the trail head!!!), auroras, moose and bears."  --Americas Roof
