August 27, 2003 - Wildflowers of the Northwoods and BWCA

Pearly Everlasting, Photo by Erik W. L. Anderson

This report is written by Lorraine Anderson (lorraine@bwca.cc). She is part of a group of three seniors that have been looking at wildflowers in Cook County, Minnesota. They have gone out almost every Wednesday for over 20 years and love it, even in the winter. But of course there aren't any flowers in the winter!!

Wednesday Wildflower Report: August 27, 2003
We didn't go tromping through the woods today because of health reasons. The only new flower of the week was one of many varieties of Knotweeds - Polygonum. Someone said that if it were larger it would be realAugust27-1condensed.jpg (111191 bytes) beautiful. It had light powdery small leaves with a cluster of tiny red flowers in the axis.
The color on the highway comes mostly from White & Purple Asters, Scentless Chamomile, Goldenrod,
Tansy, Pearly Everlasting, Bird's-foot Trefoil and Yarrow.
The temperature has dropped and a beginning of fall is in the air.
This will be the last report of the season. Later I will put them all together alphabetically with their blooming times.
