Found blooming in Cook County, report by Lorraine Anderson

This is a cold dry spring and the flowers are later than usual but not in the abundance we are use to.  We went to the Pike Lake road to check on the Bloodroot and they were all gone.  When we went to the Ward Lake road to find the Dutchman's Breeches, Spring Beauty and Wood Anemone the plants were smaller and had fewer blooms.  Nevertheless, it was a beautiful day and it was fun walking around in the woods.

What we saw:

Anemone, Wood - Anemone quinquefolia
Dandelion, Common - Taraxacum officinale
Dutchman's-breeches - Dicentra cucullaria
Marsh-marigold - Caltha palustris
Pussytoes, Field - Antennaria neglecta
Spring-beauty - Claytonia caroliniana
Strawberry, Common - Fragaria virginiana

The First Blooming Shrub:

Hazelnut - Corylus both the short male (staminate) (catkins) flowers and the very tiny red female (pistillate) flowers.
