Found blooming in Cook County, report by Lorraine Anderson

Finally it happened! We saw our first wildflowers for the season (except for Dandelions). It was a mild winter but a cool and late spring. Our group is made up of four women who love wildflowers and get together every Wednesday to look for them and to just enjoy being outside and loving our environment. We have been doing this for 20 years and never tire of it. There is always something new to learn. We were somewhat disappointed when we went to our favorite Bloodroot spot and found only a few flowers instead of many. Maybe another spot will be better.

What we saw:

Arbutus, Trailing - Epigaea repens
Bloodroot - Sanguinaria canadensis

Dandelion, Common - Taraxicum officinale
Pussytoes, Field - Antennaria neglecta

The First Blooming Shrub:

Hazelnut - Corylus both the short male (staminate) (catkins) flowers and the very tiny red female (pistillate) flowers.
