June 18th, 2014 - Report by Angelique Edgerton

Hiking has been good, so I have a lot to mention this week! Below is what I have seen: One of the convenient things about plants is that they don’t move or disappear when it rains, making it easier for wildflower enthusiastsButtercup - Photo by Erik W. L. Anderson than birders when the weekend forecasts call for rain. On Saturday we went up to Devil’s Kettle in Judge C. R. Magney State Park. There, we saw a variety of understory plants in bloom, including: rose twisted stalk (Streptopus lanceolatus), low-bush blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium), starflower (Lysimachia borealis), little-leaf buttercup (Ranunculus abortivus), blue-bead lily (Clintonia borealis), bunchberry (Cornus canadensis), baneberry (Actea rubra), and goldthread (Coptis trifolia).

Down the shore along the Superior Hiking Trail near Pincushion, the trails were wet but the flowers were out. This time we were able to find downy yellow violet (Viola pubescens), strawberry (Fragaria virginiana), Howell’s pussytoes (Antennaria howelii), twin flower (Linnaea borealis), and red osier dogwood (Cornus syriaca) all in flower.

Over the hill, up at the Wildflower Sanctuary Garden near Hedstrom Lumber, the wildflowers were out in abundance, including the stemless lady’s slipper (Cypripedium acuale). Here, we also saw more bunchberry, starflower, baneberry, and red osier dogwood. New plants in bloom included: virgin’s bower (Clematis virginiana), northern bluebell (Mertensia paniculata), columbine (Aquilegia canadense), non-native forget-me-not (Myosotis sylvatica), non-native wintercress (Barbarea vulgaris), non-native large-leaved lupine (Lupinus polyphyllus), and non-native tall buttercup (Ranunculus acris).

Further west along Lake Superior, along the hiking trails of Cascade River State Park, we saw many of the same plants in bloom, such as bunchberry, rose twisted stalk, starflower, blue-bead lily, and goldthread.
