Canoeists Rescued from Saganaga Lake |
| On June 7, 2002, Sue Prom of Voyageurs Canoe Outfitters
contacted Cook County Law Enforcement to report two canoeists in the
cold waters of Lake Saganaga. Spencer Olson, 50, and James Jacoby,
55, both of Minneapolis, were pulled from the lake by other boaters and
taken to islands on the big lake before eventually being brought ashore.
Jacoby, who was first taken to Hook Island, refused transport to the hospital. Olson, however, was very hypothermic and rescuers had him bundled in sleeping bags on Englishman's Island. When he was safely on shore, the Gunflint Trail Ambulance brought him to the Cook County North Shore Hospital. He was then transferred by Lifeflight to St. Mary's Hospital in Duluth. According to a St. Mary's spokesperson, Olson was released from the hospital on June 11. |
