Comments: The
snow fall over the past weekend has really improved the snowmobiling
conditions along the Gunflint Trail. Just about the entire trail system
has been groomed. The groomers have been out the last 4 days grooming
the trails. Overall reports from snowmobilers that have been stopping
by, have been positive. There are still a few sections that are bumpy
but overall things are really shaping up. We have some light snow
forecasted for the next couple of days but it does not sound like
anything significant. Snow levels vary a little bit along the Gunflint
Trail from about 14” to 18” depending upon where you are at. The trails
have about a 8”-10”+ packed base. Temps yesterday were around 30 and
overcast, it was 14 here this morning at about 6 am. Today’s high is
supposed to be in the high 20’s. Our first riders of the day just pulled
in for some lunch.

snow this weekend and after riding we found anywhere from 8-12 inches of
fresh snow that fell over the weekend!! Groomers are out on normal
schedules this week getting ready for some fantastic riding. Over the
weekend we rode both lake and land trails, both were good, but the lake
riding was really good.....like a big pillow flat too! And guess what it
is still snowing!!! Our are is suppose to get another 2 inches today!
Head up North for what looks to be mild temps and no traffic!! Our Crane
Lake business's are open are ready to serve you!!

North
Shore State Trail
Trail Conditions
Updated 2/2/12 |
Features: 146 mile natural surface trail from Duluth to
Grand Marais. The trail winds its way through the forests behind the
outer bluffs that overlook Lake Superior, and provides access to some of
the most rugged and beautiful scenery in Minnesota. The trail also
connects to GIA trails in Silver Bay, Beaver Bay, Finland, Tofte and
Lutsen, as well as numerous local trails, created and maintained by
local snowmobile clubs.
For most of its length, the North Shore Trail provides a backcountry
experience and, in some areas, wilderness conditions. The great majority
of the trail is in a remote, natural and undeveloped setting, although
some logging and farms are included. Trail visitors may encounter moose,
deer, bear, fox, hawks, waterfowl and possibly timber wolves. |

Comments:
We groomed the trail from the Caribou Parking Lot north to the Cook
County trail junction just south of Grand Marais this week. There's
between a 3 & 6" base on this section of trail. Warm temperatures into
the 30's have prevented us to groom south of the Caribou. The trail
south of the Caribou parking lot was packed and groomed last week. If
you do go riding, please use caution. Warm temperatures are in the
forecast.

Tomahawk Trail, Isabella
Trail Conditions
Updated 1/30/12 |
Features: Trail is 86 miles long,
from Ely to the North Shore State Trail. As quoted from SuperTrax magazine:
“Typically accessed from the North Shore Trail, the Tomahawk starts off
zigzagging through the rugged highlands that stand in a miles-thick row
along the shore of the big lake. Then, crossing the ridgeline, the trail
begins a slow glide down into ancient rocky, river canyons full of
shadows and portent.” SuperTrax named the Tomahawk Trail as one of
the ten best snowmobile adventures. Only three trails in the
United States were featured. Want lodging right on the trail?
You can access the Tomahawk directly from the doors of the private
cabins at
Timber Trail (Click

Fresh Snow: 2" in last

Comments:
This trail has been rolled but there is a problem with a beaver dam just
off the Kawishiwi Trail that is causing a fast flow of water over the
trail. It’s basically not passable at this time, however, the grooming
crew and the DNR are trying to find a solution to this problem. There is
a 6 inch base on the trails and they are listed in poor condition. This
trail is rideable but rough with a minimal base, but you may want to
slow it down a bit. If you looking to travel towards the North Shore,
you may want to detour across White Iron Lake, then across Birch Lake to
the Hidden Trail and then on to the Stony Spur. The trail between Mud
Creek and Vermilion Lake is passable, but go slow as it is rocky. Lake
riding is very good, but follow the staked trails for safety.
