Snowmobiles are not allowed in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, but there are a large number of areas to ride in surrounding areas, with over 20,000 miles of trails in Minnesota.

Gunflint Trail, Grand Marais, Minnesota

Gunflint Trail, Grand Marais, MN

Trail Conditions Updated 2/3/10

Features:  Follows the historic Gunflint Trail Scenic Byway and its lakes, with numerous scenic loops and spurs that provide fun for hours or days.

Fresh Snow: ?" in last 24 hours, ?" in last 7 days Base:  ?" Woods:  ?"

Comments:  Currently the trails around and near Gunflint Trail are in great shape. There is a good solid base and all the trails are getting regularly groomed during the week. It really couldn't get any better so head out and have a great ride. The Beargrease Race has come and gone so the major concerns for dog teams on the trail are greatly reduced but remember, you could encounter them anytime, anywhere, so always ride with caution and be on the look out. The trail to Grand Marais is still icy in areas and there is a minimal amount of snow in the down town area. You can use it but you may consider trailering up a ways for good conditions.

North Shore State Trail

North Shore State Trail

Trail Conditions Updated 1/28/10

Features:  146 mile natural surface trail from Duluth to Grand Marais. The trail winds its way through the forests behind the outer bluffs that overlook Lake Superior, and provides access to some of the most rugged and beautiful scenery in Minnesota. The trail also connects to GIA trails in Silver Bay, Beaver Bay, Finland, Tofte and Lutsen, as well as numerous local trails, created and maintained by local snowmobile clubs.
For most of its length, the North Shore Trail provides a backcountry experience and, in some areas, wilderness conditions. The great majority of the trail is in a remote, natural and undeveloped setting, although some logging and farms are included. Trail visitors may encounter moose, deer, bear, fox, hawks, waterfowl and possibly timber wolves.

French River: Base:  8" Woods:  20"

Comments:

The entire trail is being groomed this week. The snow and ice storm that occurred last weekend along the shore has made the trail narrow in spots due to frozen trees, branches and brush hanging over the trail. The trail will be groomed again on Friday & Saturday night.

The John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon starts in Duluth at 1:00pm on Sunday, Jan. 31st and runs the entire trail until Thursday, February 4th. The trail remains open to snowmobiling however extreme caution is needed while riding and trail conditions will vary.

Tomahawk Trail, Isabella

Trail Conditions Updated 2/3/10

Features:    Trail is 86 miles long. As quoted from SuperTrax magazine:
“Typically accessed from the North Shore Trail, the Tomahawk starts off zigzagging through the rugged highlands that stand in a miles-thick row along the shore of the big lake. Then, crossing the ridgeline, the trail begins a slow glide down into ancient rocky, river canyons full of shadows and portent.”  SuperTrax named the Tomahawk Trail as one of the ten best snowmobile adventures.  Only three trails in the United States were featured.  Want lodging right on the trail?  You can access the Tomahawk directly from the doors of the private cabins at Timber Trail (Click here to book a cabin online).

Fresh Snow:  ?" in last 48 hours, ?" in last 7 days Base:  4" Woods:  14"

Comments:  After a great weekend of riding, trails are in fair condition. Mud Lake to Lake Vermilion was groomed Sunday night. Expect fair conditions with about a 4 inch base. The trail between Birch Lake and White Iron Lake is impassable. A backhoe is working to clear away the brush on that trail. The Hidden Trail from the Stony Spur to Birch Lake is passable but not groomed. Local trails are a little rough but will be groomed today. The trail from Ely to Knotted Pine is groomed and in fair condition with at least a 4 inch base. Knotty Pine to the North Shore was groomed Tuesday night. As always, all trails will be groomed by the weekend, with a regular twice a week schedule to be in place soon. Please watch for low hanging boughs and debris on the trail from the recent heavy snowfalls. Use caution, slow down on corners, and ride safe! Area lakes are staked. Please follow the staked trail when choosing lake travel.
