Comments: We
rode all the trails on Sunday and the conditions varied a lot. Starting
a Devil Track Lake it is recommended not to use the X trail up to Two
Island Lake. There will be a lot of bare spots and dirt. From there the
Expresswway had some fair conditions up to great conditions in different
portions of the trail. Most should last for the next weekend. Conditions
up near Poplar Lake are going to be poor and difficult to get to the
facilities in that area unless you expect spring riding conditions and
are expecting a lack of snow. The best areas I found that had no dirt
and bare spots were the Swamper Trail, Musquash Trail and the lower
portion of the Gunflint Trail. Expect to be able to access these areas
from the east end of Devil Track Lake at the Landing Restaurant, the
parking lot at Two Island Lake and the parking lot on the Gunflint Trail
near the Greenwood Road. That is about 15 miles from Grand Marais. It is
impossible to ride into Grand Marais as the south facing hill has lost
all it's snow. The State Trail has snow but again expect bare spot in
the corners. The are plenty of lakes that offer good snow and fun riding
so spend some time in those areas to get your miles in. All the
facilities will be open and will welcome any and all the hardcore folks
who want that last chance to get out and ride in Cook County. There will
be fun festivities going on all weekend up at the mid-trail area with
the Mush for a Cure sled dog race. This is a fun event with activities,
BBQ and dance throughout Friday and Saturday. Call Trail Center for
information 218-388-2214. We talked to the trail manager Sunday and
there will grooming going on into the week as conditions permit.

North
Shore State Trail
Trail Conditions
Updated 3/4/10 |
Features: 146 mile natural surface trail from Duluth to
Grand Marais. The trail winds its way through the forests behind the
outer bluffs that overlook Lake Superior, and provides access to some of
the most rugged and beautiful scenery in Minnesota. The trail also
connects to GIA trails in Silver Bay, Beaver Bay, Finland, Tofte and
Lutsen, as well as numerous local trails, created and maintained by
local snowmobile clubs.
For most of its length, the North Shore Trail provides a backcountry
experience and, in some areas, wilderness conditions. The great majority
of the trail is in a remote, natural and undeveloped setting, although
some logging and farms are included. Trail visitors may encounter moose,
deer, bear, fox, hawks, waterfowl and possibly timber wolves. |

Comments:
The trail
from the Laine Road to Beaver Crossing and from Finland to the Caribou
parking lot was last groomed on Saturday, March 6th. Warm temperatures &
rain prevented the remaining sections of trail to be groomed. This was
our last grooming run for this season. As of today, Thursday, March
11th, there is still rideable snow in the Finland area. Expect spring
riding conditions. Warmer temperatures and rain continue to be in the
forecast which will cause trail conditions to deteriorate.

Tomahawk Trail, Isabella
Trail Conditions
Updated 3/10/10 |
Features: Trail is 86 miles long. As quoted from
SuperTrax magazine:
“Typically accessed from the North Shore Trail, the Tomahawk starts off
zigzagging through the rugged highlands that stand in a miles-thick row
along the shore of the big lake. Then, crossing the ridgeline, the trail
begins a slow glide down into ancient rocky, river canyons full of
shadows and portent.” SuperTrax named the Tomahawk Trail as one of
the ten best snowmobile adventures. Only three trails in the
United States were featured. Want lodging right on the trail?
You can access the Tomahawk directly from the doors of the private
cabins at
Timber Trail (Click
