The Pincushion Mountain Trail System is a 25 kilometer silent sport trail system perched high above Lake Superior, 2 miles north of Grand Marais, Minnesota. Because of its varied terrain, excellent trail design and spectacular vistas of Lake Superior and Devil Track River canyon, this trail system is enjoyed by thousands annually for cross country skiing, snow shoeing, hiking, running and mountain biking. With annual average snowfall of 110", Warming Chalet, Pisten Bully grooming for classic and skate skiing, Pincushion Mountain is a great Nordic skiing destination!

Comments:  We're pretty much done grooming for the season and skis are put away - Though the trails are still skiable - just not groomed.

45 miles north of Grand Marais. Large system near Canadian border and BWCA. Good mix of terrain with lots of overlooks. Many trails for classical with limited skating (~ 30K). A very good trailside restaurant! 3 trailside lodges.   These trails are not state funded and the MN SKI pass does not apply.  Upper Gunflint Nordic Trail Passes can be picked up at Gunflint Pines Resort, Gunflint Lodge, and Heston’s Lodge.  All ticket sales go to trail leases, equipment, and maintenance.

Central Gunflint Cross Country Ski Trail System - Photo by Dan Baumann, 1/25/13

27 miles north of Grand Marais. Well groomed trail system near Minnesota's BWCA. Good mix of terrain for all levels of skiers. Grooming caters to classical skiers but skating available (~ 25K). 1.5-2K lighted sections at two trailside lodges.  Lodging available at Bearskin and Golden Eagle Lodge.

Groomed single track backcountry trail in BWCA Wilderness that connects Central Gunflint Trails with Upper Gunflint Trails. Yurt to Yurt skiing available. free public parking is available at the Banadad’s eastern and western trailheads. The eastern trailhead is twenty-eight miles up the Gunflint Trail turn left on the Lima Grade drive one mile turn right on the Little Ollie Road and drive one mile to the eastern parking area. The western trailhead is on the left one-quarter of a mile before the Loon Lake Public Access (45 miles from Grand Marais) - for 4-6 cars only.  Minnesota Ski Pass required.
