Originating in Scandinavia, skijoring,
which means "ski-driving" in Norwegian, combines dog
mushing and cross country skiing. Skijoring allows a dog and its
owner to enjoy the BWCA winter together. Imagine journeying across
a Boundary Waters lake through the glistening ungroomed snow far from
civilization.
Overnight winter expeditions in the BWCA
are not recommended for those who have not journeyed the BWCA before and
who have not winter camped before. To carry
your gear, a small sled, or pulk, is recommended. Any breed of dog
has backwoods skijoring potential, but larger breeds, of course have
greater strength.
