Ice Fishing in the Boundary Waters

The Gunflint area has the longest ice over season in the state, with an average ice out of May 7 (earliest 4/15/76, latest 5/26/66).  Ely area's average ice out is April 30 (earliest 4/10/45, latest 5/23/50).  In contrast, Lake Minnetonka in the Twin Cities has an average ice out of April 13.

Stream Trout Lakes

Lake outside or partly outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area: mid-January to mid-March

Lakes entirely within the BWCA: Early January to March 31

Lake Trout Lakes

Lake outside or partly outside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area: mid-January to mid-March
